OpenAI’s AGI boss is taking a leave of absence
CEO of AGI deployment steps away for weeks as COO and CMO also exit roles, triggering major reorganization.
OpenAI is undergoing significant executive changes as Fidji Simo, the CEO of AGI Deployment, announced she will take medical leave for several weeks due to a neuroimmune condition. According to an internal memo obtained by The Verge, Simo's departure is part of a broader leadership reorganization that also sees COO Brad Lightcap moving to a special projects role reporting to Sam Altman, and CMO Kate Rouch stepping down to focus on her cancer recovery. President Greg Brockman will assume control of product development during Simo's absence, including leading the company's super app initiative.
On the commercial side, CRO Denise Dresser will take over much of Lightcap's former COO responsibilities, while CFO Sarah Friar and CSO Jason Kwon will manage business operations. Gary Briggs will temporarily lead the marketing department until a permanent CMO replacement is found. The reshuffle follows several months of challenges for OpenAI, including internal controversy over Pentagon contracts, the deprioritization of the Sora video tool to focus on enterprise AI, and the recent departure of chief communications officer Hannah Wong in January. Despite the changes, OpenAI maintains it has a "strong leadership team" focused on advancing research and serving its global user base.
