OpenAI removes ChatGPT text limits for free users, adds Think button
Unlimited text chats are coming to free tier, plus a new Think button for harder questions.
OpenAI is making a significant shift in ChatGPT's accessibility. Starting next week, users on the free and Go tiers will no longer face rate limits on text-only chats, removing a common friction point for casual users. However, messages that include file uploads or images will still be subject to limits. Alongside this, free and Go users will get a "Think" button that activates higher reasoning for complex questions, and this week the default model for these tiers is upgrading to GPT-5.6 Luna, the recently released model.
For Plus and Pro subscribers, OpenAI is updating GPT-5.6 Sol in ChatGPT to be "more reliable with facts," specifically reducing errors around dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions. The update makes ChatGPT better at using retrieved sources and delivers more direct responses with tighter formatting, cutting unnecessary detail. Plus and Pro users also gain a new slider to control how much reasoning ChatGPT applies to each answer. The updated Sol and the slider roll out Thursday.
