OpenAI and Work Louder launch Codex Micro button pad for coding agents

OpenAI has finally released hardware, but not the rumored AI smart speaker with Jony Ive. Instead, the company partnered with keyboard maker Work Louder to launch Codex Micro, a $230 programmable button pad designed specifically for its coding platform, Codex. The device features 13 mechanical switches, a joystick, dial, and touch sensor — closely resembling Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2 and a previous pad made with Figma. Six frosted keys provide a live view of Codex threads, using colors to indicate task status (complete, needs feedback, running, error). Command keys can be assigned to common actions like push-to-talk, accept/reject changes, and send, while the joystick and dial control workflows and reasoning level. All mappings are configurable from the ChatGPT desktop app, and the pad includes 32 additional keycaps with Codex icons.

This limited-run collaboration is separate from OpenAI’s primary hardware project with former Apple designer Jony Ive, reportedly an AI-powered smart speaker expected next year. The launch comes amid renewed attention after Apple filed a lawsuit accusing OpenAI of stealing hardware secrets — allegations OpenAI denies. Codex Micro is available on Supply Co while supplies last; OpenAI hasn’t specified how many units exist. The device aims to give developers more tactile control over their AI coding agents, moving beyond traditional keyboard shortcuts.
