The 88,500 square foot space across Jahn Court and the Brassworks Building will accommodate up to 544 employees when it opens in 2027, serving as OpenAI's largest research and development hub outside the United States. The announcement follows OpenAI's decision to pause its ambitious 'Stargate UK' data center project in North Tyneside, which had planned to deploy up to 8,000 NVIDIA GPUs initially and scale to approximately 31,000 over time. The company cited high energy costs and regulatory uncertainty as primary reasons for halting the data center development, highlighting the infrastructure challenges facing AI expansion in the UK. Despite this pause, OpenAI maintains around 200 existing London staff and continues to support UK initiatives through its SME Accelerator programme and 2024 government memorandum of understanding, which includes data residency commitments for UK customers.
Phoebe Thacker, Global Head of Data Research Programmes and London site lead, emphasized that "the UK has an incredible depth of talent and a strong track record in AI," noting that this investment reflects OpenAI's long-term commitment to the region. The new office will support engineering, commercial, and enterprise teams that rely on high-performance computing infrastructure, even as physical data center expansion faces hurdles.
