OpenAI Commits $1B to Put Daybreak AI in Defenders’ Hands

OpenAI has committed $1 billion in subsidized access, training, technical support, and partnerships for its Daybreak AI security initiative, with support aimed at the next six months. The program prioritizes resource-constrained defenders of water and electricity systems, local governments, community banks, nonprofits, and open-source software. Daybreak offers two access levels: Daybreak Blue for common defensive work using OpenAI’s mainline models, and Daybreak Red for approved organizations tackling more sensitive, technically demanding work with specialized cyber models — provided as a managed service. Access is available through Codex Security via a plugin, cloud, or CLI, and requires an application plus extended personally identifying information to guard against misuse. Early users like Zscaler report that Daybreak helps find vulnerabilities at machine speed across text, voice, and images. Through the Daybreak Defense Network, OpenAI is working with partners such as Cisco and Okta on product integrations and managed services, and enterprises can also use open-source red teaming tools like Promptfoo. While the $1 billion targets frontline defenders, enterprise security teams can evaluate Daybreak through OpenAI or participating vendors — but should review data access, human approval requirements, and independent verification of findings before deployment.
