OpenAI's Brockman takes product lead, plans ChatGPT-Codex merger

OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman is officially taking the reins of the company's product strategy, according to a Wired report. The move solidifies an interim arrangement that began when Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of AGI deployment, went on medical leave. In a staff memo, Brockman outlined plans to merge ChatGPT with the programming product Codex into a single, unified experience. 'We're consolidating our product efforts to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future, to win across both consumer and enterprise,' Brockman reportedly said. The integration aims to combine conversational AI with code generation capabilities, laying groundwork for an AI 'super app' that can handle both natural language tasks and software development.

This restructuring is the latest in a series of shifts following CEO Sam Altman's declared 'code red' late last year, which demanded the company refocus on its core ChatGPT experience. Since then, OpenAI has halted 'side quests' including the video generator Sora and the OpenAI for Science research division. The company has instead emphasized its ambition to build an AI 'super app' that could rival platforms like WeChat or Google by integrating multiple functionalities into one interface. Simo, who remains on medical leave, reportedly collaborated with Brockman on these changes. The move signals a strategic pivot toward immediate product impact over exploratory research, as OpenAI doubles down on AI agents capable of autonomously executing complex tasks.
