A New Scoreboard Ranks 8,000 AI Voices in Hours Instead of Weeks

⚡If you use AI voiceovers or audiobooks, this tells you which ones are actually good.

Deep Dive

AI voice software has exploded. As of September 30, 2026, more than 8,000 text-to-speech (text-to-speech means software that reads written words out loud) models sit on Hugging Face, a popular site where people share AI tools. Most are free and open. The problem: nobody could easily tell which ones were good. The usual method was to show two AI voices to people and ask which sounded better, then tally the votes. That works, but it is slow, and it quietly favors paid companies that can pay to enter.

A team of researchers built the Open TTS Leaderboard to fix that. Instead of human votes, it runs three automatic checks. First, it uses speech-recognition software to transcribe each AI voice and counts pronunciation mistakes. Second, it times how quickly audio is produced, both for big batches and for live streaming. Third, it measures whether a cloned voice still sounds like the original speaker. What used to take a couple of weeks of collecting votes now takes a couple of hours.

The leaderboard also covers many languages, not just English. That matters, because a voice that sounds great in English can stumble badly in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. The team is upfront about a real limitation: these tests measure clarity, speed, and voice matching, but not warmth, emotion, or whether a voice sounds human and pleasant. Those still need human ears.

The practical upshot is that anyone building an audiobook, a phone menu, a video voiceover, or an accessibility tool can now compare free options quickly, instead of guessing or paying for the biggest brand.

Key Points
  • Over 8,000 AI voice models exist online, but until now there was no fast, fair way to rank them
  • The new leaderboard checks pronunciation accuracy, generation speed, and how closely a cloned voice matches the original speaker
  • Scoring a model drops from roughly two weeks of human voting to about two hours of automated testing

Why It Matters

Cheaper, better AI voices mean affordable audiobooks, dubbing, and accessibility tools — plus new voice-cloning risks.
