Robots Get a Free Shared Safety Playbook Anyone Can Copy

A group of robotics engineers has launched the Open Source Safety Consortium, a project with a simple but unusual goal: share the safety paperwork behind robots, not just the free software. When companies build self-driving vehicles, warehouse robots or mining trucks, they must prove the machine is safe. That proof — called a safety case — involves listing everything that could go wrong, writing requirements, running tests, and documenting assumptions. Today, every team rebuilds that from scratch. The consortium wants that evidence published alongside the code, so the next team can reuse it.

Their first worked example is a protective-stop prototype: the system that safely shuts a machine down when something goes wrong. The firmware, the hardware designs, and a draft safety case are all being published together. A founding member, Polymath Robotics, already uses it in its own machines. The target is a high level of rigor — engineers call it SIL 3, meaning roughly a one-in-a-thousand chance of failure on demand. That's a serious bar, similar to what industrial machinery and car systems must meet.

The honest catch: none of this is certified, and copying someone else's safety evidence does not automatically make your machine safe. A mining haul truck, for example, still needs its own analysis of braking, plus testing at the actual mine site. The consortium is openly asking how much evidence others can really reuse, and whether the time saved is worth the work of adapting and maintaining it.

Why should a non-engineer care? If this works, robots arrive cheaper and faster, with fewer accidents. Safety review is one of the biggest costs in automation, and it's a big reason robots are slow to reach farms, warehouses and job sites. Sharing the boring parts could speed up everything from delivery drones to self-driving tractors — while keeping the same scrutiny on the risky parts.
