Online Algorithm for Fractional Matchings with Edge Arrivals in Graphs of Maximum Degree Three
Mathematicians solve a long-standing puzzle about matching items as they arrive online.
Researchers have developed an online algorithm that achieves the best possible performance for a fundamental matching problem in networks where each point connects to at most three others. The algorithm guarantees a competitive ratio of approximately 0.5914, matching a known theoretical limit. This work also establishes a performance gap between two types of matching solutions for these networks, a distinction that does not exist for simpler, two-connection networks.
Why It Matters
This advances the theoretical limits of online optimization, which underpins real-time resource allocation in computing and logistics.
