In tests across several vision tasks, OASIS cut the data roughly sixfold, slashed the power needed to move that data by 5.8 times, and reduced lag by 2.5 times. The kicker: performance dropped by at most 1.5%. For a self-driving car, that means smaller cables, cooler electronics, faster reactions — and potentially a cheaper vehicle, since the data pipeline is a real cost. The same logic applies to a drone that needs to fly longer, or a security camera running on a battery.

The catch is that this is a research paper, not a shipping product. The tests were controlled, not real streets in the rain at night. And because the system only optimizes for a specific job it's been told to do, it isn't automatically trustworthy for tasks it wasn't tuned for. Compressing too aggressively is a safety question, not just a quality one.
