Google Health AI hallucinates workouts, infuriating Fitbit users

Google Health's AI Health Coach is under fire for repeatedly inventing workout and health data, just as Google launches its Pixel Watch 5 and a redesigned Health app. Fitbit users have flooded Reddit and social media with complaints. One Redditor with a Fitbit Inspire noted the app generated a workout summary with form analysis—a feature the device physically cannot perform, calling the stats "made up." Others reported the AI mistaking walking or folding laundry for swimming, imagining 5am runs, and even creating house moves that never occurred. One user prompted Google Health to list its own false statements, dubbing them "Nonstop lies from the AI," while another pointed out the app claimed they were sleeping during a two-hour period with no heart rate recorded—dryly adding, "If someone is sleeping and their heartrate is 0, it's called being dead."

The timing is particularly bad for Google, coming as it pushes a new wave of hardware and premium AI health subscriptions. The AI is designed to summarize metrics and offer lifestyle tips, but users say its "chirpy" summaries bury real data in walls of text and too often hallucinate entirely fake events. Some have speculated the app may be "entirely coded by AI agents" given its anomalous behavior, though that remains unconfirmed. TechRadar's own review of the Fitbit Air criticized the Health app as "a bit of a mess, and not intuitive to use." The backlash underscores a broader warning for any company integrating AI with sensitive health data: when the AI gets things wrong, users quickly lose patience—and subscriptions. Google has not yet responded to requests for comment.
