Most people have never heard of ROS 2, but they've almost certainly met it. It stands for Robot Operating System (a shared software toolkit that robot makers build on, so they don't have to reinvent the wheel). Better camera and sensor support, including Intel RealSense and DepthAI, means robots see the world in sharper 3D. And a large set of simulation tools (Gazebo) lets engineers test a robot in a virtual world before spending a cent on hardware. There's also new mapping and navigation code for robots figuring out where they are.

Why should you care? Because this is the unglamorous plumbing that decides how fast and how cheaply robots improve. When a motor driver or 3D camera 'just works' out of the box, a small startup can build a useful robot in months instead of years. That pressure flows downhill to prices: warehouse automation, delivery drones, robot lawnmowers and eventually home helper robots all get a little closer to affordable.

The catch: none of this is something you install or notice directly, and it only applies to the newest version of ROS 2. Older robot systems don't automatically get these fixes, and each company still has to test and adopt them.
