Nav2 Update Helps Robots Navigate Smarter and Faster

Nav2 just dropped its Lyrical Release, and it’s packed with major updates across the board. The release introduces a new nav2_ros_common package for easier ROS API abstraction, plus big upgrades to MPPI including open-loop control, plugin motion models, and delay compensation. New pause-and-resume capabilities are powered by a dedicated behavior tree node, and a new Vector Object Server handles polygon and shape data with costmap integration. There’s also an Adaptive Goal Checker for more accurate goal achievement, RPP improvements like Dynamic Window Pure Pursuit, and support for true zero-copy IPC in composed bringups. The Inflation Layer got a serious speed boost with a new algorithm and optional OpenMP processing, and there are collision monitor toggles, exclusion zones, and more.
