Chinese AI Is Free to Download — and the World Is Grabbing It

An AI researcher named Nathan Lambert just published the written version of testimony he gave to Congress about who is winning in free, downloadable AI. The short answer: China. Since he started counting in August 2025, Chinese 'open-weight' models — AI you can download and run yourself, free — have been downloaded about 3.2 billion times. American ones: 1.6 billion. That's roughly double.

Traffic tells the same story. On OpenRouter, a service that lets developers pick which AI model answers their requests, open-model usage exploded from about 1 trillion tokens a week to 80 trillion in a single year. (A 'token' is just a small chunk of text — think of it as a word fragment the AI reads or writes.) Chinese models handle more than 80% of that traffic. In other words, when people choose a free model, they're mostly choosing one made in China.

Why does that matter to you? These models are what power cheap or free AI tools — coding helpers, chatbots, translation, document summarizers — running on a company's own servers instead of a paid service like ChatGPT. If the best free options come from China, more of the world's everyday AI quietly runs on Chinese technology, and American companies lose both customers and influence over how these tools behave. Lambert also found China's free models sit only 2-5 months behind the paid cutting edge, while America's free models lag 6-9 months back. The gap is smallest for AI that can take actions on your behalf — Qwen, GLM and Kimi are now the go-to picks for that work.

The catch: 'open-weight' doesn't mean transparent or safe. Anyone can download these models, including scammers, and nobody fully knows what's baked into them or what rules they'll follow. Cheaper AI and more choice, yes — but also less control over the technology quietly doing your work.
