Musk's Plan to Speed Up AI Power Comes With Pollution Costs

Elon Musk says he has a fix for one of AI's biggest problems: not enough electricity. His company SpaceX will start making its own gas turbine blades, the hard-to-build parts inside natural gas power plants. He says this could bring new gas plants online up to 18 months faster. That matters because AI data centers — giant buildings full of computers that run AI — need huge amounts of power, and the grid can't keep up.

Gas turbines burn natural gas to make electricity, and their blades are incredibly hard to make. They run at temperatures hotter than the melting point of the metal they're made from, so each blade must be cast as a single, unbroken crystal inside a vacuum furnace. Only four companies in the world can do this well, and they're all booked solid through 2030. By making blades in-house, Musk would control a skill every other AI builder depends on — a big competitive edge.

But faster gas power comes with a hidden cost. In Memphis, where Musk's AI company already runs gas turbines next to its data centers, the NAACP says the company is operating without required pollution permits. The turbines emit smog-forming chemicals and formaldehyde, which are linked to asthma, respiratory disease, and certain cancers. Community researchers found the air got "slightly worse" since the data center went up. Similar fights are happening in Virginia's "Data Center Alley" and other places where gas turbines are becoming the quick fix for power shortages.

The real question is whether we want faster AI at the expense of cleaner air. Musk is betting we do. But the people living next to these turbines may end up paying the price.
