Free AI Tools Let You Build Simulated Worlds on a Laptop

This paper introduces two free, open-source toolkits that make it easier for anyone to run AI simulations at home. The first, SD-AgentFoundry-2D, is a 2D world where multiple AI agents can walk around, talk to each other, and respond to things like fires in certain areas. The second, SD-AgentFoundry-3D, is a 3D environment where an AI gets first-person images and decides where to move next. Both are meant to run on ordinary Mac, Windows, or Linux computers, so you don't need a high-end server.

The point is to lower the barrier for learning about so-called "agent-based simulations." In plain terms, these are virtual worlds where AI programs act like little people or characters. Normally, studying or modifying these systems takes heavy coding and powerful machines. This project deliberately keeps things simple and unfinished, which is actually a feature. Because the code is open, students, hobbyists, and researchers can poke at it, change it, and build their own experiments.

Why does this matter? AI agents are becoming common in things like video games, city planning, and disaster response. But most people never get to see how they work. With these tools, you could simulate a tiny neighborhood, test how different rules change behavior, or practice using AI at home. The catch is that this is a foundation, not a ready-to-use app. You'll need some coding comfort to get the most out of it. Still, it's a rare open door into a part of AI most people only hear about.
