Microsoft's New Copilot Puts Chat, Docs and Coding in One App

Microsoft just combined its many Copilot apps into a single one. For years, the company had separate AI assistants for regular people and for big companies, with different looks and features. Now there's one app called simply Copilot, with three tabs: Home, Code, and Autopilot. It works the same whether you sign in with a personal account or a work one. Microsoft says about 90 million people pay for Microsoft 365 out of their own pockets, and it wants them to get the same power at home that offices get.

The Home tab mixes chatting with 'agents' (AI that can finish a job on its own, not just answer questions). A new feature called Office in Copilot lets you ask for a launch plan in Word or a budget in Excel and get a real, editable file back — no more jumping between programs. Coming in October: a Today view that shows what you missed in email, calendar, and Teams chats, and what needs your attention now versus later.

The Code tab lets you build simple apps by describing them in plain English — often called 'vibe coding.' It runs in a 'sandbox,' a locked-down space so experiments can't break anything else. Big companies get extra security so their private data never leaves systems they control. Microsoft hasn't shown these new apps to reviewers yet, so what ships may not match the promises made at launch.

The catch is cost. Microsoft says its pricing model is 'evolving,' with usage-based billing for key features — meaning heavy users could pay more than a flat monthly fee. The app was clearly built first for business customers, so some parts may feel designed for offices rather than families. If you already pay for Microsoft 365, this is worth trying; just keep an eye on your bill as the pricing rules settle.
