Microsoft’s Latest Windows 11 Update Adds New Features, Strengthens Security

Microsoft has begun the gradual rollout of its April 2026 Security Update for Windows 11, targeting versions 24H2 and 25H2. While billed as incremental, the update delivers several practical usability and security enhancements. The most significant change is to Smart App Control, a security feature that locks down systems to only run trusted apps. Previously, this tool was only available on fresh installs and required a full OS reinstall to disable. The new update allows users to simply toggle it on or off directly within the Windows Security app, making the powerful feature far more accessible for existing devices.

Another notable AI-powered improvement expands the capabilities of Windows Narrator. The feature, which uses AI to generate descriptions of on-screen images, was previously limited to cloud-based Copilot+ PCs. The update now brings this functionality to all Windows 11 devices by leveraging Copilot analysis instead of requiring a local AI model. Users can activate it with keyboard shortcuts (Narrator key + Ctrl + D for a focused image). Beyond these headliners, the update includes refinements to the Settings app, such as an improved Device info card on the Home page that now displays key hardware specs like graphics and storage details, and reliability improvements for update downloads.

The rollout is being managed via Microsoft's Controlled Feature Rollout (CFR) technology, meaning users will see the new features trickle out over time rather than all at once.
