Microsoft kills Copilot Mode, adds AI tools natively to Edge browser
Multi-tab reasoning, voice, and Journeys now built into Edge without a separate mode.
Microsoft announced on May 13, 2026 that it is retiring the separate Copilot Mode in Edge, but rather than removing AI features, it is integrating them directly into the browser on both desktop and mobile. Copilot Mode was initially an experiment for AI-assisted browsing, allowing features like multi-tab analysis. Now, those capabilities are available through the standard Copilot button in Edge, simplifying the experience for users who no longer have to enable a dedicated mode.
Key new features include multi-tab reasoning, which lets users ask Copilot to compare information across open tabs—useful for tasks like weighing hotel listings or reviewing research pages. On mobile, Edge now supports Journey organization of browsing history into topic-based projects with summaries, plus Voice and Vision that lets users share their screen and ask questions by voice. Microsoft also added a Study and Learn mode that turns web pages into guided quizzes, a Writing Assistant for drafting and tone adjustments, and a feature that converts open tabs into a podcast (English-only initially).
Importantly, users can customize which Copilot features appear in Edge settings, and data access—such as browsing history or past chats—requires explicit permission. For IT teams, this update means reconsidering browser policies around AI features and user training. Overall, Microsoft is betting that frictionless, built-in AI will make Edge more competitive against Chrome, Gemini Live, and ChatGPT voice modes.
- Multi-tab reasoning lets Copilot compare data across open tabs for faster decision-making.
- Journeys on mobile organizes browsing history into topic-based projects with summaries and next steps.
- Study and Learn mode converts web pages into interactive quizzes, while Writing Assistant handles drafting and tone.
Why It Matters
By embedding AI as a default part of Edge, Microsoft makes browsing smarter without requiring extra steps.
