Microsoft just launched an AI that does your office work for you — and it's built on Anthropic's Claude

Microsoft has launched Copilot Cowork, a significant evolution of its AI assistant strategy that moves beyond simple Q&A to full workflow automation. Built directly into Microsoft 365, this agentic AI can understand complex requests, create execution plans, and carry out multi-step tasks across the Office suite—including Outlook, Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint—while users focus on other work. The system operates with a check-in mechanism, seeking user approval before applying any final changes, balancing automation with user control.

Under the hood, Copilot Cowork leverages Anthropic's Claude technology, specifically the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Cowork launched in January 2026. This gives Microsoft's offering sophisticated reasoning and planning capabilities, wrapped within Microsoft's enterprise security framework with access to the full M365 data graph. Real-world examples demonstrated by Microsoft include the AI reviewing calendars to identify and reschedule low-value meetings for focus time, compiling past communications and generating briefing documents for client meetings, and conducting company research that delivers cited memos with accompanying Excel workbooks.

The launch represents a direct challenge to ChatGPT's dominance in office environments by integrating deeply with the tools professionals already use daily. Pricing is structured across tiers: the existing $30/month M365 Copilot plan includes some Cowork functionality, while the new $99/month E7 Frontier Suite offers full access beginning May 1. Early access via the Frontier program opens in late March, positioning this as a premium enterprise solution that could fundamentally change how knowledge work is organized and executed.
