Microsoft's Windows 11 update finally lets you move the taskbar anywhere

After years of requests, Windows 11 insiders can now reposition the taskbar.

Deep Dive

Microsoft has finally answered user demands by enabling a movable taskbar in the latest Windows 11 Insider build. Users can now position the taskbar at the top, bottom, left, or right via the Taskbar settings under 'Taskbar behaviors'. The update also includes alignment options (left/center for top/bottom; top/center for left/right) and a smaller taskbar buttons mode. However, features like auto-hide, tablet-optimized taskbar, touch gestures, and search boxes in alternate positions are not yet supported. The Start menu will also receive tweaks in the coming weeks, including the ability to show or hide Pinned and Recommended sections separately. These changes are currently experimental and may take time to appear for all insiders.

Key Points
  • Taskbar can now be moved to any screen edge (top, bottom, left, right) via Taskbar settings.
  • Feature is rolling out to Windows 11 Insiders in the latest experimental build.
  • Limitations: auto-hide, tablet mode, and search boxes are not yet supported in alternate taskbar positions.

Why It Matters

Restores a beloved Windows 10 feature, giving power users more screen real estate and ergonomic flexibility.
