Microsoft 365 Copilot revamp loads 2x faster with cleaner UI

Twice the speed, cleaner design, and smarter progressive disclosure.

Deep Dive

Microsoft has announced a major update to Microsoft 365 Copilot, its AI assistant integrated into Office apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The redesign features a cleaner interface that the company claims loads twice as fast as the previous version. A key innovation is 'progressive disclosure'—the assistant now surfaces tools and controls contextually based on the user's prompt, rather than showing all options at once. This reduces clutter and speeds up workflow. The prompt box itself is now expandable and supports direct text formatting (bold, italics, lists, etc.), allowing users to polish responses without leaving the assistant.

Copilot operates within a side panel across desktop and mobile, answering questions, suggesting edits, and applying changes to documents. Users can also open a dedicated chat window from any paragraph, cell, or slide. Microsoft says responses are now more reliable and structured, making them easier to scan for key information. The update follows a similar design overhaul by Google for its Gemini AI app last week, where the chatbot also restructures responses based on prompts. The rollout begins today across all platforms.

Key Points
  • Loads twice as fast as the previous version with a cleaner, reduced-clutter interface.
  • Introduces 'progressive disclosure'—contextually shows relevant tools based on the user's prompt.
  • Expandable prompt box now supports inline text formatting (bold, lists, etc.) for polished responses.

Why It Matters

Faster, smarter AI assistance reduces friction in daily Office workflows, boosting productivity for professionals.
