Microcosmos is a simulation engine where artificial lifeforms are modeled as elastic filament chains in a 2D viscous fluid world, built from the ground up for modern GPU hardware and end-to-end differentiable. Four experiments validate the engine: hand-designed locomotion, gradient-based filament folding, neuroevolution and quality-diversity search for swimming and chemotaxis, and linear scaling with particle count. Accepted at ALIFE 2026, Microcosmos is released as an open platform for large-scale open-ended evolution.
