Meta-Reinforcement Learning for Robust and Non-greedy Control Barrier Functions in Spacecraft Proximity Operations
A new AI method makes autonomous spacecraft maneuvers safer and more fuel-efficient.
Researchers developed an AI system using meta-reinforcement learning to improve how spacecraft autonomously inspect and dock with other objects. The system learns to shape safety guarantees, making them less conservative than traditional methods. In simulations for cruise control, inspection, and docking, it maintained safety while reducing fuel consumption. A recurrent neural network version performed especially well in complex inspection scenarios, improving mission feasibility.
