When free tools failed, it was often because one weird word wrecked the whole query. Think of it like a search engine that only shows results when every word in your sentence appears on a webpage. One typo and you get nothing. Paid tools are better at recovering from typos and missing info. The good news: the best free tools were just as accurate once they got close to the right area — they just struggled to find the candidate in the first place.

The researchers believe simple pre-cleaning — normalizing abbreviations, removing junk words, fixing common typos — could shrink the gap between free and paid systems a lot. For everyday users, this means map apps and delivery services may keep improving. And when an address is incomplete, thoughtful software can treat it the way a human mail carrier does instead of giving up.
