MERIT Feedback Elicits Better Bargaining in LLM Negotiators
This new feedback system finally teaches LLMs how to bargain like humans.
Researchers introduced MERIT, a new framework that dramatically improves LLMs' bargaining skills. It includes AgoraBench, a benchmark with nine challenging scenarios like deception and monopoly, and uses human-aligned metrics based on utility theory. The method trains models via prompting and fine-tuning on a human preference dataset. Results show baseline LLM strategies often fail, but MERIT substantially improves performance, yielding deeper strategic behavior and stronger opponent awareness.
