MATS Research opens Winter 2027 fellowship with $6,400 monthly stipend

MATS Research has opened applications for its Winter 2027 fellowship, a fully-funded 12-week residential program running from January 19 to April 10, 2027, in Berkeley, CA, and London, UK. Accepted fellows receive a $6,400/month stipend, a compute budget up to $8,000/month for non-technical tracks and up to $16,000/month for technical tracks, plus housing, meals, travel, and J1 visa support. The program connects participants with mentors from Anthropic, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Redwood Research, and the AI Futures Project, alongside dedicated research managers and a close-knit cohort. More than 80% of candidates who apply can secure a 6–12 month extension with a $7,680/month stipend and continued compute support.

The Winter 2027 cohort offers seven research tracks: Empirical Theory, Strategy and Forecasting, Policy and Governance, Systems Security, Biosecurity, Founding and Field-Building, and a featured track for founders and field-builders looking to launch new AI safety initiatives. MATS has trained 631 alumni with 100+ mentors, producing 215+ publications with 17,000+ citations. Roughly 75% of pre-2026 alumni now work in AI safety/security, 10% have co-founded active startups, and alumni have launched 30+ initiatives.
