Reddit Bot Taxonomy: 18 species identified in 3,389-bot ecosystem study

Researchers from the London School of Economics and other institutions have published a comprehensive taxonomy of Reddit bot species, analyzing 3,389 identified bots and their full activity histories. Using clustering on temporal, community, linguistic, and semantic features, the team found 18 distinct bot types. These range from content-specialized bots (e.g., news aggregators, meme reposters) to behavior-driven ones (e.g., argumentative or supportive) and infrastructural roles like moderation and utility support.

The temporal analysis revealed that bot numbers and activity grew rapidly, peaked around the COVID-19 pandemic, and then began declining even before Reddit's controversial 2023 API pricing changes that killed many third-party apps. Surprisingly, the overall diversity of bot species remained remarkably stable throughout this decline. This suggests that while the overall population shrank, the ecosystem maintained its functional breadth, much like natural ecosystems losing biomass but retaining species richness.

The authors argue that these findings challenge simplistic views of bots as either harmful or benign. Instead, bots form an evolving digital ecosystem with specialized niches. Understanding this ecology is crucial for platform governance and AI safety, as automated agents increasingly participate in online communities.
