Scientists Map How AI Is Changing Our Social Lives

A group of researchers wanted to understand how artificial intelligence is changing the way humans live, work, and connect with each other. AI models like ChatGPT are now used for writing, learning, making decisions, and even acting as companions. But until now, the social science research on this topic was scattered across many fields with no clear map. So they took on a huge task: reviewing nearly 48,000 papers to organize everything we know about AI's social effects.

The researchers found that this field falls into three big buckets. The first is "AI as Social Minds" — studying how AI itself behaves in social situations, like whether it shows personality traits or biases. The second is "AI Societies" — looking at what happens when multiple AI agents talk to each other and create their own dynamics. The third, and largest, is "AI-Human Interactions" — how people perceive, trust, and are affected by AI in their daily lives. That last category makes up 78% of all research in this area.

But there's an interesting disconnect they uncovered. Even though most published papers focus on how humans interact with AI, the most highly cited and influential papers in top computer science conferences tend to look at AI behavior and AI-to-AI interactions. In other words, what grabs attention in elite academic circles is more about the machines themselves than about actual human impact.

If most famous studies look at AI in isolation, we may be missing crucial insights about how AI tools affect real people's jobs, mental health, and relationships.
