Surgical Robot Cleans Wounds 10x Faster, Helping Surgeons Focus
A robot that removes dead tissue could shorten surgeries and boost recovery odds.
A team from UC Berkeley and Intuitive Surgical has created a robot that can perform a surgical task called debridement — removing dead or diseased tissue from a wound so healthy skin can heal. Right now, surgeons often do this by hand under a microscope, which is slow and tiring. The new system, named MACAW, lets a robot take over the repetitive cutting and grabbing with surprising precision.
The robot works by watching the wound through a single camera. Figuring out depth from one camera is like trying to tell how far away something is when you close one eye — tricky. The MACAW system solves this with a clever "attention window" that zooms in on the key spot and estimates depth accurately. In 100 practice runs with the da Vinci surgery robot, it got within a few pixels of its target in under half a second.
The result is speed that could change how operating rooms use time. The single-armed version removed 304 fragments per hour with a 93% success rate. A two-armed version reached 473 fragments per hour — about one every 7 seconds. That's dramatically faster than manual debridement, which often takes several minutes per fragment. For patients, faster cleaning means less time under anesthesia. For surgeons, it means fewer tedious minutes hunched over a wound.
The catch? This is still a research prototype tested on mannequins or lab setups, not real patients yet. The system must prove it can handle the messy variability of human tissue and get regulatory approval. Still, it's a clear step toward robots that work alongside surgeons — doing the dull, delicate chores while humans handle the big decisions.
