A study introduced an autonomy-supportive shared control strategy for smart wheelchairs that preserves users' natural movement variability. In a user study with three conditions—no assistance, conventional assistance, and variability-preserving assistance—the variability-preserving approach kept task-relevant performance comparable to conventional assistance while leading to more favorable interaction experiences. Participants reported significantly higher perceived agency than with conventional assistance and the highest perceived usefulness overall, suggesting that variability-aware assistance can support both performance and user autonomy in physical human-robot collaboration.
