But where uncertainty remained high, individuals contracted their movement and discretionary activities far beyond what the formal rules required, creating a chilling effect. Strikingly, even after the devices were removed, former wearers reported persistent habits of calculating their every action against an imagined threshold, suggesting lasting psychological impacts. The paper calls for design changes to make institutional sensing systems more transparent, including better documentation of sensor uncertainty and post-wearing evaluation protocols.
