Tom Hiddleston reinvents Pompeii documentary as 'time detective'

National Geographic has launched *Pompeii: Out of Time*, a three-part docuseries that breaks the traditional documentary mold by casting Tom Hiddleston as a 'time detective.' Produced by Kevin Wright, who worked with Hiddleston on *Loki*, the series follows the actor as he investigates the lives of three specific Pompeii residents—a teenage boy, a local businesswoman, and a Praetorian guard—over the city's final 24 hours. Rather than relying on stilted reenactments, the show uses scripted dramatic scenes with high production values to make the ancient disaster feel immediate and cinematic. Hiddleston, who studied classics at Cambridge and visited Pompeii as a teenager, brings infectious enthusiasm that Wright believes can attract viewers who normally skip documentaries.

The series balances its dramatic storytelling with rigorous science. Geologist Chris Jackson appears throughout to correct common misconceptions—for instance, that people were killed by lava (they were actually suffocated by ash and pyroclastic flows). The creative team leaned into the Latin word 'historia,' which means both 'storytelling' and 'history,' to justify blending imagination with fact. Archaeologists and historians embraced the approach, reflecting a new movement in the field to make ancient history more human and accessible. The result is a powerful, immersive experience that treats Pompeii's victims as real people with lives not so different from our own, 2,000 years later.
