Anyone who has ever been cut off by a smart speaker knows the problem: the machine has no idea when you're finished. That awkward pause before it answers — or the annoying moment it barges in halfway through your sentence — is a technical problem called "end-of-turn detection." A team of researchers from the audio and speech field ran a careful experiment to figure out what actually tells an AI that you're done talking.

They built a lightweight system and fed it three different kinds of information, one at a time and in combinations. First, the raw sound of speech — how your voice physically sounds. Second, "prosody," which is the musical side of talking: rising and falling pitch, the length of pauses, the way a sentence trails off. Third, the meaning of your words, processed by a language model. They trained all versions identically so the comparison would be fair.

The result was unexpected. The version using only sound and prosody won. It correctly spotted the end of a speaker's turn 93% of the time, responded in about four-tenths of a second, and only interrupted prematurely about 8% of the time. Adding the word-meaning component didn't help at all — it made the AI cut people off more often. In plain terms, the meaning of your sentence overlaps too much with the meaning of the previous one, so it's a noisy clue. Your intonation and your silences are much cleaner signals.

The practical upside is speed and cost. Skipping the language-model step means voice assistants can respond faster and run more cheaply, without heavy computing power. The catch is that this study used a controlled setup, not the messy real world of accents, background noise, and people who trail off mid-thought. Still, it suggests the path to natural-sounding AI conversation runs through listening to how we speak, not just what we say.
