Most intriguingly, the visual changes seemed to run about three years ahead of the actual water level — as if the artwork senses trouble before the lake does. The team also debunked an earlier claim from a small study that a simple measure of image randomness tracked global temperature; with 42 years of data, that link fell apart.
So what? A single sculpture is not a global thermometer, and a strong statistical link is not proof of cause. The three-year lead could be a quirk of this one location. But the bigger idea is practical: satellites already photograph the entire planet for free, and the bottleneck has never been taking pictures — it's making sense of them. If AI can turn a 55-year-old artwork into a reliable gauge of water supply, the same trick could be applied to reservoirs, farmland, and coastlines anywhere.
The authors released their images, methods, and code publicly, so other scientists can check the work or build on it.
