Jetstar A320 avoids collision with Qatar 777 at Sydney Airport

Safety regulators are probing a dramatic near miss at Sydney Airport, Australia's busiest, where a Jetstar Airbus A320 narrowly avoided crashing into a Qatar Airways Boeing 777. The incident occurred Sunday morning while the Jetstar flight was taxiing toward the runway for a departure to the Gold Coast. The A320's crew suddenly observed the Qatar Airways jet, under tow by an aircraft tug, crossing their taxiway at close range.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) confirmed both aircraft stopped abruptly, resulting in an injury to a cabin crew member on the Jetstar flight and damage to the connection between the Boeing 777's nose gear and the aircraft tug. Investigators are now collecting flight data from both aircraft, reviewing air traffic control communications, and interviewing the crew and tug operators involved. The ATSB is also appealing for any witness video of the near collision from people at the airport, as it works to determine how the two widebody and narrowbody jets came so close to catastrophe.
