Apple's Foldable iPhone Would Give You Two Screens in One Device

Apple isn't just stretching its iPhone software across a bigger screen. According to the company's iPhone Duo announcement, iOS 27 moves the important buttons — Lock Screen controls, the app Dock, and navigation — to the sides of the display instead of the bottom. Opening the phone shows two Home Screen pages at once, with your widgets on the left. The Dynamic Island, the little black pill that shows alerts and live updates, turns sideways and runs along the edge. The goal is simple: keep the middle of that wide screen free for actual content.

The bigger change is multitasking. On the Duo, you can run two apps side by side, or two windows of the same app — something regular iPhones have never done well. Apps can also react to the hinge and fold angle: content can shift position as you fold the phone, and buttons can move away from the crease. Picture propping it half-open on a desk like a tiny laptop, or holding it like a book. That's a genuinely different way to use a phone, closer to a small tablet that happens to fit in your pocket.

Apple also loosened one annoying rule. StandBy — the mode that turns your phone into a bedside clock or desk display — currently needs to be plugged in. On the Duo, it works on either screen without charging. So a half-folded phone on your nightstand becomes a useful always-on dashboard, showing the time, weather, or a calendar without you touching it.

Here's the honest catch. Every one of these features is built for the iPhone Duo specifically, so owners of current iPhones get almost nothing new. Foldables also tend to cost well over $1,000, and third-party apps — your banking app, your photo editor — need to be updated before they look right on that odd, changing screen shape. Expect a rough first year while developers catch up.
