Apple's New iPhone 18 Pro: Smarter AI, Longer Battery, $1,199
Same price as a laptop — but now it runs AI without the cloud
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on Sept. 9, and they hit stores Sept. 18. The smaller phone starts at $1,199; the bigger Pro Max starts at $1,299. That's a notable jump from older Pro models, which began around $999. Both come in four colors — black, silver, glacier and burgundy — and can hold up to 2TB of storage, roughly enough for 500 hours of high-quality video.
The headline change is AI. The new phones run Apple Intelligence and a rebuilt Siri that does much of its thinking on the phone itself rather than sending your questions to a distant server. In plain terms: your assistant should answer faster, work when you have no signal, and keep more of your personal data private. It's Apple's answer to ChatGPT-style helpers, but built into the device you already carry.
The camera is the other big upgrade. A new "variable aperture" lens works like the pupil of your eye, opening wide for dim restaurants and narrowing in bright sun — no fiddling required. All three rear lenses now shoot at 48 megapixels, a big step up in detail. Meanwhile, a redesigned cooling system (a "vapor chamber") keeps the phone from slowing down during long games or video calls, and battery life reaches 36 hours of video on the Pro, 45 on the Pro Max.
The catch: $1,199 is real money, and many AI features arrive gradually through software updates rather than on day one. If your current phone is two or three years old, the jump feels big. If it's newer, you may want to wait a year.
