Lightcone Commons launches $20M funding platform for coordinated philanthropy
New platform aims to solve philanthropist's dilemma with $20M initial round.
Lightcone Commons, unveiled by Oliver Habryka on LessWrong, is a new funding platform designed to solve the coordination problem in large-scale philanthropy. It uses the S-Process—previously refined for the Survival and Flourishing Fund—where funders submit preference curves and take turns allocating marginal funds to their highest-value opportunities. The system is designed to be honest-play-friendly and resistant to gaming. The first round will deploy approximately $20 million, with any nonprofit, for-profit, or individual eligible to apply. Funders can follow evaluations from the platform's evaluators or bring their own, and the platform charges a 3% fee while evaluators receive 2%.
The timing is deliberate: with the upcoming Anthropic and OpenAI IPOs, a wave of new wealth will enter philanthropy, often lacking infrastructure to avoid grifters and inefficiency. Lightcone Commons aims to be the neutral one-stop shop for these funders. Applications close August 23, 2026, with recommendations by October 23. A second round is expected in January 2027. The platform particularly aims to fund AI risk mitigation and other high-impact areas. Zvi Mowshowitz, a longtime evaluator, endorses the platform and will participate in the first round.
