Western Sydney Airport opens in October with 24/7 operations

Sydney's long-awaited second major airport, Western Sydney Airport in Badgerys Creek, will finally open to passengers in October 2026 after more than a decade of planning. The A$5.6 billion (US$4 billion) project is Australia's first major new airport in over 50 years and comes with a game-changing feature: 24-hour operations. Unlike the existing Kingsford Smith Airport near the CBD, which is subject to strict noise regulations that limit take-offs and landings to between 6am and 11pm, the new airport will allow airlines to schedule red-eye flights and round-the-clock cargo operations. This flexibility is especially valuable for Asian and Gulf routes that serve as key connections to Europe, and it taps into a fast-growing, ethnically diverse population in Sydney's western suburbs.

However, the airport's location about 60km (37 miles) west of central Sydney presents a trade-off. While it will relieve congestion and offer cheaper real estate for logistics, business travelers who fill premium seats may find the commute less appealing. To streamline passenger flow, the airport will feature biometrically enabled security gates, a modern touch aimed at efficiency. Australian Transport Minister Catherine King called it "a big moment for Sydney," noting that passenger flights commence in just 137 days. The project positions Sydney to compete more aggressively with Melbourne and other global hubs that already offer unrestricted night operations.
