India's BrahMos missile deal with Vietnam opens new export frontier

India has sealed a significant defense export deal with Vietnam for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, jointly developed with Russia, and is in the final stages of a similar agreement with Indonesia. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh announced the development at the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore, emphasizing India's commitment to ASEAN nations. The Vietnam deal is estimated at around 60 billion rupees ($629 million), including training and logistical support. The BrahMos missile has proven combat capabilities, having been deployed during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, India's military campaign against Pakistan after a militant attack in Kashmir that killed 26 civilians. India has already exported the missile to the Philippines, and these new deals mark a strategic expansion of its domestic defense manufacturing. The missile's combat record and raw performance have boosted its appeal among regional buyers, positioning India as a key defense exporter in Southeast Asia.

Beyond the immediate deals, India's push to strengthen defense ties with Vietnam and Indonesia reflects broader geopolitical calculations. Both nations have overlapping concerns about China's assertiveness in the South China Sea and the Indo-Pacific region. By equipping them with BrahMos missiles, India is not only boosting its export revenue but also building strategic partnerships with countries that share similar security interests. The BrahMos, a supersonic cruise missile capable of speeds up to Mach 2.8, offers a proven deterrent capability. With these deals, India is attempting to replicate the success of the BrahMos sale to the Philippines, which has enhanced Manila's naval strike capabilities. For Vietnam, which has long sought to modernize its military with limited budget, the BrahMos deal provides a cost-effective, combat-tested system that can target both land and naval assets. The deal also validates India's 'Make in India' initiative in the defense sector, showcasing its ability to produce world-class weapon systems for the global market.
