Drones That Fly Without GPS or Sensors Are Coming
Imagine drones navigating by video alone—no maps, no motion sensors, no signal needed.
A new paper presents a vision-only state estimation system for quadcopters that uses no inertial sensors at all. The system relies only on a stereo camera pair, synchronized stereo images, and motor thrust commands. It works entirely in the drone’s body frame and uses stationary scene points as indirect inertial references, estimating body-frame pose, velocity, angular velocity, gravity, and disturbances. The system also produces a sparse 3D point cloud with per-point position, velocity, and covariance, built from a four-view bundle adjustment. Notably, it does not depend on GPS, IMU, or any world-frame infrastructure, making it a measurement source for a downstream world model anchored in the current body frame. The paper is evaluated on the VID dataset.
