Windows 365 Cloud PC tested on Mac, Android, iOS – seamless but pricey
Run Windows 11 on any device with 2 vCPUs, 8GB RAM, and no hardware maintenance.
ZDNET's Ed Bott tested Microsoft's Windows 365 Cloud PC across multiple devices, including a MacBook, a five-year-old iPad, a Samsung phone, and various PCs. The service provisions a dedicated Windows 11 Enterprise virtual machine in Microsoft's data centers, accessible via any web browser or the new Windows app (formerly Remote Desktop, now built with WinUI3). Setup is straightforward: sign in with a work or school account, and the Cloud PC appears instantly. The test unit came with 2 virtual CPUs, 8GB RAM, and 128GB storage.
While the experience is smooth across platforms, the subscription cost remains the biggest hurdle. Microsoft is currently offering 20% off, but the regular pricing is still steep for individual users. The key benefit, however, is hardware independence: no need to repair, replace, or upgrade physical devices. For professionals constantly switching between devices or wanting a consistent Windows environment on a Mac or iPad, the Cloud PC delivers — provided you can stomach the monthly fee.
- Works on any device: PC, Mac, iPad, or phone via browser or the Windows app (formerly Remote Desktop).
- Test specs: 2 virtual CPUs, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage; runs Windows 11 Enterprise.
- Subscription pricing is currently 20% off but remains high; eliminates hardware maintenance costs.
