This could keep your face out of facial-recognition databases for good
Researchers built a tool called HYDRO that aims to anonymize a person's identity across photos and video frames so the target can no longer be reliably recognized, while keeping key characteristics of the visual data intact. To stop anyone from reversing the de-identification, HYDRO injects noise into the de-identified result and then applies a diffusion-based recovery step to improve fidelity. Tested on three diverse datasets, it showed state-of-the-art fidelity and attribute retention, and was the only target-oriented method resilient against reconstruction attacks — reducing their success by 85.7% on average compared to several state-of-the-art competitors.
