200 US startups oppose ban on Chinese open-weight AI models

Nearly 200 U.S. startups have banded together under the Little Tech Association to urge the Trump administration against imposing broad restrictions on Chinese open-weight AI models. In letters to President Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, 179 companies argued that a blanket ban would seriously harm growing American startups that rely on these cheaper, capable models to compete. Particle founder Suhail Doshi warned that “there’ll be hundreds of companies that instantly die” if such a ban is enacted. The coalition instead advocates for narrowly tailored safeguards that address national security risks without cutting startups off from widely used, affordable AI foundations.

Washington’s push for tighter controls stems from concerns over China’s rapid AI progress, highlighted by models like DeepSeek, Qwen, and Kimi K3 that rival U.S. offerings on performance and price. Additional tensions arise from allegations of model distillation, where Chinese developers allegedly use outputs from frontier American models (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic) to improve their own systems, raising IP and security issues. This has created a divide: established AI companies support stronger guardrails, while startups fear higher costs and reduced competition. If broader restrictions are introduced, smaller developers could face higher deployment costs, fewer self-hosted options, and greater dependence on commercial platforms.
