Huawei's New Stacked Data Center Could Make AI Cheaper and Faster

AI data centers are getting so power-hungry that Huawei wants to start building them upward. On Tuesday, the Chinese tech giant showed off a four-layer "3D data center" in Wuhu, Anhui province, where cooling systems, computing equipment, power supplies and backup power are stacked vertically instead of spread out across a flat building. The design is meant for extremely dense AI setups, including clusters of more than 100,000 accelerator cards — the specialized chips that train and run AI models like chatbots and image generators.

Why does that matter to you? Because the cost and speed of building these facilities eventually shows up in what AI services cost and how quickly new features arrive. Huawei says server rack power has jumped from a few kilowatts to 100 or even 200 kilowatts, and it keeps climbing. Tech companies worldwide are scrambling for power and space, which is part of why AI subscriptions and cloud bills stay high.

The bigger idea isn't the shape of the building — it's the assembly line. Huawei says more than 90% of the mechanical and electrical systems can be prefabricated in factories, cutting on-site setup from about six months to three months. The Wuhu facility took roughly nine months to build, versus the 18 to 24 months typical for traditional data centers. Huawei's Wang Tao said clusters of over 100,000 cards "will become the basic configuration" for large AI models.

The catch: this is still mostly Huawei's own claim, and the company's chips are largely shut out of the U.S. market. Real-world proof on cooling reliability, energy efficiency and whether hardware from other vendors fits will take years. Even so, the direction is clear — AI's next bottleneck isn't clever software, it's bricks, power and cooling, and whoever builds those fastest wins.
