Huawei Races to Build AI Chips Without Nvidia — Here's Why It Matters

Huawei just announced it's moving its next AI chip, the Ascend 960DT, to early 2027 — three quarters sooner than planned. AI chips are the engines that power chatbots, image generators, and the AI tools you're starting to use at work. Huawei is racing to build these engines at home because the U.S. restricts China's access to Nvidia's most powerful chips. Each new generation of Huawei's chip is expected to be about twice as fast as the last, with more models promised yearly through 2029.

Instead of trying to build one chip that beats Nvidia's best, Huawei is betting on teamwork. Its approach, called Peerium, connects thousands of ordinary chips so they act like one enormous machine. A new "supernode" can link up to 4,096 chips, and future superclusters could reach a million. The trick is getting them to talk to each other fast enough — in normal setups, that chattering can eat up more than 40% of the time spent training AI.

Huawei says it has shipped over 1,000 AI systems to 370+ customers, with 5,200 developers building on its software. But the company openly admits it can't make enough chips to satisfy Chinese demand. That shortage is why it's not chasing a big international expansion right now — it's selling everything it can build at home already. More factories take time and money.

The real hurdle may be software, not silicon. Nvidia's years of developer tools, called CUDA, make switching away painful — like changing the locks on every door in your house. Huawei is essentially betting that sheer scale, clever wiring, and a growing homegrown ecosystem can eventually make its clusters good enough. If it works, Nvidia faces a serious rival in the world's second-largest AI market. If not, China stays stuck on older hardware — and the global AI race looks very different.
