Howdy's dated $3/month ad-free streaming service said to have 1M subscribers
300K signed up in August alone, retention beats industry averages...
Roku's budget-friendly streaming service Howdy has quietly crossed the 1 million subscriber mark just six months after its August launch, according to research firm Antenna. The $3-per-month, ad-free subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service saw nearly 300,000 sign-ups in its debut month and has added roughly 100,000 subscribers each month since. Howdy accounts for 23% of all SVOD subscriptions made through The Roku Channel, Roku's free ad-supported TV platform, indicating strong uptake among existing Roku users.
What's remarkable about Howdy's early success is its retention rate. Antenna estimates that 51% of subscribers who joined in August and September 2025 were still active six months later, outperforming the premium SVOD average of 47% and the specialty SVOD average of 38%. The low $2.99 price point likely reduces churn by lowering the financial commitment barrier. However, Howdy's library remains notably dated, featuring titles like Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and The Age of Innocence (1993). Roku has not confirmed Antenna's figures but expressed satisfaction with the service's momentum, and executives have promised newer content is coming soon.
- Howdy hit 1M subscribers in 6 months with 300K sign-ups in August alone
- 51% retention rate after 6 months beats premium SVOD average of 47%
- Service costs $3/month, ad-free, with a dated library of 2009-2014 titles
Why It Matters
Howdy proves low-cost, ad-free streaming can attract price-weary subscribers despite limited content.
