Study: How You Phrase AI Prompts Affects Your Phone's Battery

Your phone's built-in AI runs directly on the device, which saves your privacy but uses your battery. A new study from researchers at several universities looked at whether the way you phrase your request can change how much energy that AI consumes. They tested different prompts across real devices and found that two things matter: how mentally complex your request is, and how you structure the words.

Complex prompts — for example, asking for a detailed, step-by-step explanation instead of a quick yes-or-no answer — make the AI burn more energy per word it generates. Meanwhile, the way you structure your sentences can change the total number of words the AI needs to produce. Longer, wordier requests may trigger longer replies, which means more battery drain.

The study's authors suggest that simpler, clearer wording is generally more battery-friendly. But there's a catch: the effect isn't the same across different AI models. Some models are more sensitive to prompt style than others, so there is no one-size-fits-all rule. As on-device AI becomes a standard phone feature, these findings hint that developers may need to design prompts that adapt to each model's energy profile.
