Hong Kong water department unveils smart system, fast-tracks pipe replacement after outage

Following a major pipe burst that cut off fresh water to about 10,000 homes and hundreds of businesses in Shau Kei Wan for over 24 hours starting June 20, Hong Kong's Water Supplies Department has pledged to implement a smart management system and accelerate water main replacements. The incident, which affected areas including Tung Yuk Court, Yiu Tung Estate, and several major streets, prompted a swift policy response. The department announced Monday evening that it would replace 50km of water mains under existing improvement works and start another 40km of replacement by year-end. The budget for this financial year's replacement program will increase by more than 50% compared to last year.

The smart management system aims to use sensors and real-time monitoring to detect leaks and pressure anomalies before they cause bursts, reducing the need for emergency repairs. The department has not specified the technology vendor but emphasized a data-driven approach to infrastructure maintenance. The move is part of a broader citywide effort to upgrade aging water infrastructure, with priority on high-rupture zones. Officials hope the combination of faster pipe replacement and proactive monitoring will cut future service disruptions significantly, particularly in densely populated districts like Shau Kei Wan that rely on older pipelines.
